The Fencing Store (TFS) has built up an extremely valuable set of resources and skills to be able to find specific products and manage the entire supply chain process to get the right product delivered to our customers. Increasingly new customers are asking TFS to see how we can get them the exact product they want, to the specifications they want and at very competitive prices either on an ongoing basis or for a specific project. Earlier in 2012, we worked with a major contractor to acquire all the materials needed for 4km of "koala" fencing all complying with the Qld Main Roads demanding specifications. They saved over 40% compared to buying the same specification materials from local suppliers.

In brief, TFS's China based employees found the right supplier after visiting their factories and deeply understanding their capabilities, quality assurance processes etc. We negotiated the prices and production terms, then spent time in each factory during the production - physically checking specific product attributes for compliance, getting test reports etc before being on site when the products were packed into containers for shipment.

Within reason TFS can replicate this specialist procurement process for a wide range of products and customer requirements. Give us a call to discuss how we can save you a lot of $ for your project requirements.

Zinc and birds

We are occasionally asked about the effects of the zinc coating used on all sorts of steel products including welded wire mesh and their effects on birds and animals. There are various ways in which zinc (galvanising) is applied to steel products to prevent rusting. The most common and most effective form of galvanising is by the "hot dip" process, which immerses the steel product in molten zinc - this deposits a thick coating of zinc and is far more effective than electro-galvanising which always produces a thinner and brighter coating. The thicker the zinc coating, the longer the product will last in any enviroment compared to electro galvanising (also called electro plating).

Excessive zinc ingestion or consumption is not good for any animal, bird or human for that matter. So here are a few tips on how to manage your galvanised product where you want to.The following is in the context of keeping birds within an enclosure using a galvanised mesh product.

Galvanized Wire - Galvanized metal which has been electroplated is safe (becuase it a a very thin coating and attachs differently to the host steel material), but galvanized wire (hot dipped) is not. Birds can ingest zinc from cages and clips made of galvanized wire. Toxicity can be reduced (but NOT eliminated) by scrubbing the wire with a brush (not a wire brush as this will remove the zinc coating and allow the steel below to start rusting) and vinegar or a mild acidic solution. This removes any loose pieces and the white rust (zinc oxide) which forms on the wire. Over time more white rust which is also poisonous will form, so enclosures must be re-treated periodically.

Remember, that each bird is different. Some chew on their cages more than others and are thus more likely to ingest white rust. Bigger birds with more powerful beaks can break off pieces more easily than small birds. Most birds don't eat non-food items, but there are some who will. If you have birds in a large aviary with lots of branches or items to occupy them, they are much less likely to chew on the cage wire.

Prevention - can I do it? Zinc poisoning is from your aviary wire. Batches of wire can vary in their toxicity level.

Aging the wire is usually recommended, if you have the time available you can leave the roll out in the weather for at least 12 months before using it. Washing the wire in an acidic solution (10 % vinegar solution) is also recommended but is not 100% effective. Puchasing a wire with a plastic coating will most likely work if the bird species is not a great chewer.

Fixing methods for welded wire mesh

There are a number of different methods and materials available to fix your mesh products to posts or other structural components. Knowing what you can use will help you make the right choice based on your project.

Timber Posts or rails

Galvanised fencing staples (also known as “u” nails)

Galvanised washers and rust proof screws (washer diameter must be 2 x the mesh aperture size)

Treated timber strip / batten placed over the top of the mesh and nailed through to the host post / rail using galvanised nails or treated timber screws

Special galvanised or stainless steel clips (available from hardware stores), screwed through into the post or rail

Fencing wire or existing mesh products

Ring or hog clips – galvanised or stainless steel

Galvanised (and PVC coated) wire twisted 2-3 times

Plastic cable ties (thick and wide type, black for longer life)

Steel pipe or RHS section (preferably galvanised)

Welded with galv paint applied over the weld when finished, (but not suitable for PVC coated mesh as this will burn the PVC coating)

Galvanised washer and screw or large diam rivet (washer diameter must be 2 x the mesh aperture size)

Galvanised (and PVC coated) wire or bag ties (wire with end loops) tied 2-3 times around the pipe section (very tight tying may damage a PVC coated mesh product)

Galvanised (and PVC coated) wire to lace mesh and post together along the entire length of the pipe or section interface

Galvanised steel section or aluminium section to sandwich the mesh against the host section / post – fixed together by using washer + screws, self-tapping rust proof screws or bolts

The above fixing methods are often used by both professionals and DIY’ers; choose whichever option best suits your application.

Protective Barriers

An issue facing many commercial building owners and managers is how stop prevent debris entering or falling down through glassed windows in the event that the glass shatters for whatever reason. This was the case at the Queensland Rail Museum in Ipswich, SW of Brisbane. The old and very attractive former railway workshops building has a large area of glass along the "saw tooth" ridges along the roof line. To prevent the prospect of any shattered glass falling down onto museum visitors a mesh barrier was created using welded wire mesh.

A steel frame was made to suit the dimensions of the windows and 9.5mm sq welded wire mesh was attached to the frame on the inside of the window line. In the event that a window was broken or shattered the fragments would be caught and contained by the galvanised mesh - greatly reducing the likelihood of any glass falling down into any pedestrian areas.

The same princple can be applied to place the mesh on the outside of any window or simlar area to stop any debris hitting the windows are brids etc entering through openings to the buuld area within.

Garden Protection

Many of us are venturing enthusiastically into growing our own vegies and other garden plants. We invest wisely into modular garden beds and wait expectantly for our crops to bear their goodies only to find other unwanted thieves are helping themselves to our delights. Birds, rats, mice and other small animals also love our vegies so the challenge is to keep them out long enough for us to enjoy our crops.

Here's an example of how a customer near Newcastle used our black PVC welded wire mesh to erect a highly effective barrier around her raised garden bed to keep birds and other critters away from her vegetables. The black PVC finished mesh was selected because it provides a much higher level of resistance and protection against the natural acids or alkalines present in all soils - these have a corrosive effect on galvanising and over time will wear down the galvanising allowing rust to start on the wire. The 1200mm wide mesh was buried well below the upper soil level so the mesh did not require any other vertical supplorts. Poly pipe split along its length formed a top edge and a "lid" of mesh was placed on top to stop birds getting in - a really simple but highly effective way to protect your natural vengie crops!

Cat Enclosures

An increasing number of local councils are requiring cat owners to constrain their pets to the owners property boundaries in a growing reognition that cats take a heavy toll on native wildlife - birds, small animals and reptiles. Cats are obviously a natural hunter so they are just following their instincts. Erecting a suitable enclosure presents its own issues of what materials to use to get the strength and durability of the enclosure without creating an eyesore or impeding natural property views. Welded wire meshes in a black PVC finish answers all these requirements as seen in this example ...

Our 1800m wide black PVC welded wire mesh in the 12.5mm square mesh & 1.25mm diam wire was used to create an unobtrusive enclosure around a pergola area. The mesh went all around the pergola area from top to ground level meaning no joins along the middle (which would be the case if narrower widths mesh rolls were used).

In this instance, the views out over adjoining bushland were not diminished as the black PVC finish on the mesh always blends into the background whereas other plain galvanised or green meshes jump into the field of view, obstructing precious views and creating a much more closed in feeling.

Building a snake proof fence

A customer north of Adelaide has used our 6.5mm galvanised mesh to snake proof their dog enclosure to protect their prize Bull Mastiffs from venomous snakes. Their existing fencing mesh kept the dogs in but allowed snakes and other vermin to move into the dog area. The 1200mm wide 6.5mm mesh was placed 900mm up the fence height and then 300mm flat on the ground as shown in these pictures. It works superbly and the proud mastiff owner reports that since erecting the new snake barrier, no snakes have made their way into the dog run but they are still seeing snakes on the outside.

The new 6.5mm snake mesh was fixed to the existing wire fencing using hog rings and fencing staples to the timber posts. Where the mesh sat flat on the ground, galvanised steel tent pegs are driven into the ground. This fixing works perfectly and the 300mm flat to ground section revents any snakes or vermin from gain entry at ground level.

Hi Murray

The only area we have completed thus far is around the large dog compound and our outdoor entertaining area as Steve had to have an operation on his knee. I can tell you though that the snake/vermin mesh has been great. It allows us to keep snakes at bay without killing which occurs when using other means such as bird netting. We learnt a few valuable lessons when putting it up, the main one being place it on the outside of the area you want to keep snake proof not the inside (if you are covering existing fencing). Not sure if that makes sense but all you want facing the snakes is the snake mesh with no posts or other fence wire as these can be used by snakes to climb. It was also a little fiddly to go around external corners as you have to cut the mesh and then patch with another piece (see pics attached) and internal corners have to be folded. Additional benefits of this mesh is that visibility is barely reduced with this mesh – you can hardly see it once up. We placed the mesh 900 high with 300 on ground (pegged) but it could be dug in. We have had quite a few snakes (browns here) on our property where it is not protected – nearly stepping on two! – but none at all where we have fenced off with your mesh.

It is also a little fiddly around gates so Steve has put in a concrete step to mesh (see pics).

Hope this helps. Photo’s show pegging, attachment to existing fence via wire clips, corner folds, cutting of outer corner, patching on outer corner, etc

Mel and Steve

An update - May 2013

Hi there

The snake/vermin mesh kept our three beautiful dogs safe from 8 very large brown snakes (4ft plus) and numerous babies over the summer. We couldn’t be happier. I think you will agree the pup has grown somewhat from the pics we sent you (pictured right at 9 months old)!

We are planning on building another dog run or two and wondering if you guys sell the 50mm x 50mm dog mesh in 1200 high by 30m or longer?

We have little doubt we would have had a snake bite fatality without the snake mesh … love the stuff!!
